Siam Pattana Maritime Co., Ltd. (SPM), an affiliated entity of Siam ECL and Eastern Car Liner (ECL), recently won another contract with M.C.S Steel Public Company Limited. The agreement, worth approximately THB 300M, requires SPM to transport structural steel from Bangkok, Thailand, to Chiba and Yokohama, Japan, starting January – December 2022.

By the end of 2022, SPM expects to provide 12-13 sea freight shipments, at a total transport value of around THB 300M.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, oil prices have escalated by more than 150 percent compared to the prices at the end of 2021, resulting in higher costs of operation. Furthermore, as high freight rates sustain from the previous year, the increased fuel costs present great challenges to SPM in managing the overall transportation costs for its customers.

The ocean carrier has put effort into understanding its customers’ pain points and offering them the best solutions despite having to bear the increased operational costs. Nevertheless, structural steel is a large, high-value cargo, thus requiring extensive handling experience and expertise. Due to SPM’s experience providing transparent transportation services for large projects for more than 20 years, M.S.C Steel has entrusted the shipping company to handle their valuable cargo.

Mr. Thanit Hanbenjaphong, Director of Siam Pattana Maritime Co., Ltd.

Mr. Thanit Hanbenjaphong, Director of Siam Pattana Maritime, said, “Despite being a relatively small-sized company, SPM continuously adapts itself during changing times. We offer advice to our customers on how they can fully leverage their shipping space. For example, with extensive experience in optimizing cargo allocation while ensuring safety standards, we brought down the number of required trips—from 14-15 to 12-13 shipments—to help M.C.S Steel save on the overall costs of transportation.”

He added, “The new contract reflects our potential and professionalism in international project freight operations. Despite the difficult times in the sea freight industry, we remain fully committed to providing the best services at the best prices for our partners.”

SPM, an ocean carrier under Siam ECL, provides freight services using a fleet of Thai flagged and Sub-Thai flagged vessels. Its comprehensive service routes cover the main ports in Asia—including those in Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India—to serve Thailand’s private and public sectors. Currently, SPM plans to add one more vessel to its fleet to increase capacity.
