Siam Pattana Maritime (SPM), a subsidiary of Siam ECL, and Japan’s Eastern Car Liner (ECL) have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with M.C.S. Steel Public Company Limited. The agreement covers the transportation of 30 project steel shipments from Bangkok to Japan between 2025 and 2027, starting with nine shipments in the first year. This partnership underscores M.C.S. Steel’s trust in their expertise in handling complex project cargo.

M.C.S. Steel has entrusted SPM with the transportation of large, unique, and high-value structural steel from Bangkok to Chiba, Yokohama, Tomakomai (Hokkaido), and Hibikinada (Fukuoka). The agreement, worth THB 1,000 billion, includes a THB 300 million Contract of Affreightment (COA) for the first year, covering nine shipments of large project steel, with additional export plans for the following two years.

According to the MOU, this transportation is a part of various construction projects in Japan, including the Tokiwabashi Torch Tower, Tokyo Arena, Shinagawa 3, Nihonbashi 1 Chome, Hamamatsu Cho, Minami Aoyama, and Yaesu.

Mr. Thanit Hanbenjaphong, Director of SPM and General Manager of Siam ECL, stated that “SPM plans to acquire new Thai-flagged vessels this year, which are currently in the process of being registered for patent approval with the Board of Investment (BOI). These vessels will be operated to transport large project cargo or bulk cargo, including trains, rails, gas pipelines, and large transformers. This also covers imported cargo for Thai government agencies such as the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), PTT Public Company Limited (PTT), and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The company is now in the vessel acquisition phase and expects to complete the process by 2025. After that, it will provide transportation services across a route network covering Japan, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India, and the Middle East, supporting project cargo transportation for both public and private sectors.”
