PSA International has joined the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) as a strategic partner, marking a major step forward in global efforts to reduce carbon emissions across the shipping and port sectors. The five-year collaboration, officially announced in late July, positions PSA as the first global port operator to take on a strategic partnership role with GCMD.

Through the alliance, PSA will contribute port-side expertise to support the trial and deployment of alternative fuels and emissions-reduction technologies, helping to build a more sustainable maritime value chain. The collaboration focuses on real-world pilot projects designed to accelerate the adoption of new fuel types—such as ammonia and methanol—while ensuring operational safety and efficiency at the port level.

Ports as Enablers of the Maritime Energy Transition

Port infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling the shipping industry’s energy transition. The development of onshore power systems, bunkering capabilities for low-carbon fuels, storage and handling infrastructure, and emergency protocols is key to supporting the decarbonisation of global trade.

GCMD has identified ports as vital links in scaling decarbonisation solutions, including onboard carbon capture and the safe transport of liquefied CO₂ (LCO₂). These emerging technologies require compatible port environments to reach commercial viability, and PSA’s global network—spanning more than 180 locations in 45 countries—offers a unique platform for trial implementation.

“As the number of vessels using alternative fuels grows, port operators must adapt bunkering protocols and infrastructure to support safe and efficient operations,” said Professor Lynn Loo, CEO of GCMD. “With PSA onboard, we gain an invaluable partner capable of helping us identify operational gaps, develop harmonised safety standards, and drive ecosystem readiness.”

Real-World Pilots for Real-World Impact

The partnership will see GCMD and PSA conduct trials across PSA’s terminals to test protocols for bunkering, carbon offloading, and fuel storage, among other initiatives. The aim is to generate practical insights that can inform global policy and industry standards for the safe use of future fuels.

“As momentum builds in the maritime sector’s shift towards cleaner energy, the urgency to adopt low- and zero-carbon fuels has never been greater,” said Mr. Ong Kim Pong, Group CEO of PSA International. “PSA is proud to collaborate with GCMD as we work to position our ports as strategic energy hubs and accelerate the sustainability transformation across the entire port and logistics ecosystem.”

Through this strategic partnership, PSA and GCMD will contribute to a more resilient and climate-ready maritime supply chain, paving the way for cleaner, safer, and more sustainable global trade.
