Luka Koper has placed a repeat order for four electric Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes from Konecranes as part of its ongoing modernisation of container terminal operations at the Port of Koper. The order was booked in Q3 2025, with delivery scheduled for Q2 2026. It follows a similar order placed in 2024.
The Port of Koper is Slovenia’s only cargo seaport and a key Adriatic gateway for Central and Eastern Europe. The latest investment supports the terminal’s focus on lowering emissions and improving operational efficiency. The new electric RTGs will replace several older diesel-powered units and will be supplied with cable reel systems connected to the local grid, supported by onboard battery packs for stack changes. Each crane will also include Konecranes’ Truck Lift Prevention system to enhance safety during container handling.
Edvin Boskin, Container Terminal Technical Manager at Luka Koper, said the order reflected a long-standing relationship and aligned with the terminal’s eco-efficiency goals. He noted that the new cranes would support the modernisation programme by combining reliable performance with reduced emissions.
Luka Koper already operates a broad fleet of Konecranes equipment, including 32 RTGs and four Rail-Mounted Gantry cranes, one of which has been upgraded with a remote operating station. Philipp Reiter, Regional Sales Manager for Konecranes Port Solutions, said the repeat order would help accelerate the port’s modernisation efforts and demonstrated how electric RTG technology can support ports in achieving eco-efficiency targets.
Konecranes stated that the contract forms part of its Ecolifting initiative, which aims to enhance the environmental performance of its equipment portfolio while helping customers reduce their carbon footprint through solutions ranging from optimised diesel systems to hybrid and fully electric fleets.
