Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has formed a partnership with Innovative Space Carrier, Inc. (ISC) and TSUNEISHI SOLUTIONS TOKYOBAY Co., Ltd. to commercialize a vessel for offshore rocket launch and recovery. The project, which originated from MOL’s internal “MOL Incubation Bridge” program for new business ideas, represents the company’s first major step into the space industry.
The long-term goal is to increase the frequency of rocket launches by creating a new space infrastructure that utilizes the ocean. The companies are aiming for commercialization by 2030.
A Phased Approach to Space Logistics
The first phase of the project will focus on the development of a rocket recovery vessel. This will be followed by a feasibility study to explore the commercialization of an offshore launch vessel. MOL will leverage its extensive technology and expertise from the shipping and offshore businesses to support the venture.
The partnership with ISC and TSUNEISHI SOLUTIONS TOKYOBAY is intended to combine expertise in maritime and space technology to develop solutions that will support next-generation space transport. The collaboration positions MOL to create new value for society across a wide range of fields in the expanding space economy.
