Maersk $15 Million Manzanillo Depot Mexico Logistics Capacity

Strategic Investment Targets “Last-Mile” Efficiency Near Country’s Busiest Port

A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) has officially opened a new 31,000-square-meter logistics depot in Manzanillo, marking a $15 million USD investment to strengthen Mexico’s supply chain infrastructure. Located just 5 kilometers from the Port of Manzanillo, which handles nearly 50% of Mexico’s containerized cargo, the facility is designed to eliminate critical bottlenecks between the port and the country’s industrial heartlands.

The inauguration comes as Manzanillo marks a record-breaking 2025, during which the port handled nearly 4 million TEUs, reinforcing its status as Mexico’s primary maritime gateway for Asian trade.

Facility Specs and Strategic Capabilities

The new depot acts as an “agility layer” outside the high-pressure terminal environment, offering specialized services to streamline the movement of goods:

Operational Scale: A total area of 31,000 sqm with a storage capacity of 6,018 TEUs.

  • Reefer Support: Equipped with 50 reefer plugs and 60 repair positions to maintain cold-chain integrity for food and pharmaceutical exports.
  • Shunting & Transloading: Dedicated services to reduce truck idling at the port. Cargo can be transloaded from ocean containers into 53’ domestic boxes or flatbeds for faster inland distribution.
  • Asset Maintenance: On-site repair for dry cargo units, reefers, and gensets ensures equipment remains in peak condition for immediate turnaround.

Preparing for the 2026 Global Demand Surge

According to Patricia Perez Salazar, Managing Director for Maersk in Mexico, the facility is essential for connecting cargo arriving from Asia to the Bajío and central industrial corridors. By providing integrated landside services, Maersk aim to reduce overall logistics costs while increasing transit speed.

The timing of the investment is strategic. Mexico is set to host major global events in 2026, and Maersk expects a significant surge in demand across the retail, lifestyle, and technology sectors. Getulio Centanaro Patino, Head of Logistics and Services, noted that creating agility in the “last mile” is the most effective way to help customers maintain a competitive edge during high-volume periods.

Expanding the Mexican Footprint

The Manzanillo depot is part of Maersk’s broader expansion strategy in Mexico, which now includes:

  • 250,000 sqm of total depot capacity across Cuautitlán, Lázaro Cárdenas, and Manzanillo.
  • 59,000 sqm of specialized warehousing in Mexico City and Tijuana.
  • Air Logistics Hubs in Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City.

Looking ahead to 2026, Maersk plans to further expand its capabilities in Guadalajara and Monterrey, with a particular focus on strengthening landside infrastructure to support the booming Mexico–US cross-border trade.
