Multimodal Black Sea Gateway Adds Tandem Lift Capability of Up to 400 Tonnes

DP World Constanța has significantly enhanced its operational flexibility with the arrival of two new Liebherr LHM 600 mobile harbor cranes. Delivered via the vessel MV Anna, the units are specifically designed for the terminal’s transition into a high-capacity hub for project cargo and heavy breakbulk while maintaining its status as the largest container gateway on the Black Sea.

The cranes represent a key phase of DP World’s 20-year modernization plan in Romania, integrating advanced electric drive systems to align with the group’s global decarbonization goals.

Versatile Heavy-Lift Capabilities

The LHM 600 models provide a “three-in-one” platform that allows the terminal to switch seamlessly between containers, bulk cargo, and heavy-lift assignments. Key technical highlights include:

  • Tandem Lifting: Using Liebherr’s Sycratronic assistance system, the two cranes can perform synchronized lifts of up to 400 tonnes, making the port a premier destination for oversized industrial machinery and wind turbine components.
  • Sustainability: The primary electric drive system reduces local emissions, with a diesel backup maintained solely to ensure 24/7 operational continuity.
  • Enhanced Safety: Operators are supported by an integrated 360° camera suite, providing full situational awareness during complex maneuvers.
  • Tailored Engineering: The cranes utilize special double supporting pads, custom-engineered to match the specific structural load-bearing capacity of the Constanța berths.

Marian Drăgoi, General Manager at DP World Constanța, emphasized that these cranes enable the port to respond rapidly to shifting commercial demands in the Black Sea region. By diversifying its handling capabilities, the terminal can now process complex multimodal shipments—connecting sea, rail, and road—more efficiently.

The project was co-financed through the Transport Programme 2021–2027, an EU-backed initiative aimed at improving connectivity and multimodal operations across Romania. With these new assets, DP World is positioned to handle the increasing flow of project cargo required for regional infrastructure development and energy transition projects across Eastern Europe.
