Maersk CONCOR Dedicated Pharma Reefer Rail Corridor Hyderabad Mumbai

A.P. Moller – Maersk has officially inaugurated its first dedicated, weekly temperature-controlled rail service connecting Hyderabad’s extensive pharmaceutical manufacturing hub directly to the Port of Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority) in Mumbai. Developed in close coordination with the Container Corporation of India (CONCOR), the specialized reefer rail link provides a lower-emission, highly predictable alternative to traditional over-the-road freight haulage.

The scheduled intermodal corridor addresses a long-standing requirement among Indian life sciences exporters for consistent, cold-chain transport capable of handling sensitive, high-value medical cargo under strict regulatory compliance.

Single-Window Integration for Global Life Sciences Export Lanes

The Hyderabad–Nhava Sheva corridor operates as a fully integrated, end-to-end cold chain. Under a single-window logistics framework, Maersk assumes complete operational accountability across inland rail positioning, port terminal transfer, and ocean freight routing, while providing shippers with real-time container visibility throughout the transit.

The service relies on a standardized fleet of 40-foot refrigerated containers (reefers). To protect product integrity, strict Pre-Trip Inspection (PTI) compliance and quality-aligned container selection protocols are hardcoded into every dispatch. The service primarily feeds high-volume long-haul export lanes, connecting Indian manufacturers directly to:

  • North America: Key United States East Coast gateways including the ports of Newark, Norfolk, Charleston, and Savannah.
  • Europe & Latin America: Transatlantic and Southern Hemisphere clinical supply chains and cold-chain distribution networks.

To further streamline international trade compliance, Maersk provides exporters with supplementary customs documentation support, specialized regulatory advice, and destination last-mile trucking where required.

Mitigating Risk Profiles: Rail Intermodal vs. Road Haulage

The transition from long-haul highway transport to a fixed weekly rail schedule provides pharmaceutical logistics planners with critical risk-mitigation advantages. Unlike road freight—which is inherently vulnerable to monsoon-related traffic congestion, driver fatigue, and variable transit delays due to regional checkpoint inspections—the dedicated rail service secures fixed departure windows, priority terminal handling, and guaranteed vessel loading at Nhava Sheva.

Thomas Theeuwes, Managing Director of Maersk South Asia, emphasized that India remains central to Maersk’s global growth strategy. He noted that because the pharmaceutical sector requires absolute precision, reliability, and accountability at every stage of the supply chain, this dedicated rail link serves as a direct answer to that demand. He added that the solution wouldn’t have been possible without the operational backing of CONCOR.

Direct Contributions to Environmental Scope 3 Targets

In addition to improving supply chain security, the modal shift from road to rail yields measurable sustainability benefits. Based on current volume projections, routing pharmaceutical containers via the CONCOR rail link is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by approximately 3,000 tonnes within its first year of operation. These certified carbon savings are expected to scale as throughput expands, supporting Maersk’s binding corporate commitment to achieve Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire global footprint by 2040.

Sanjay Swarup, Chairman and Managing Director of CONCOR, stated that the collaboration reflects growing industry confidence in rail as an efficient, highly secure mode of transport for sensitive cargo. He affirmed that the dedicated reefer corridor marks a significant advancement in strengthening India’s broader pharmaceutical export competitiveness on the global stage.
