Maersk Cold Store New Zealand Top Green Star Rating

A.P. Moller – Maersk’s integrated cold chain facility at the Ruakura Superhub has been awarded a 6 Star Green Star NZ Design & As-Built rating by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC). This distinction makes it the first cold storage facility in the country to receive the highest sustainability standard for commercial construction.

Sustainable Design and Strategic Location

The 18,000m² facility, which opened in February 2024, is Maersk’s largest infrastructure investment in New Zealand. It was designed and built by Apollo Projects with a core focus on energy efficiency and emissions reduction. The location enables the seamless transfer of goods between rail, road, and ocean transport along the strategic Auckland-Tauranga trade corridor.

The building incorporates several advanced technologies, including a transcritical CO₂ refrigeration system that captures and reuses waste heat, rainwater harvesting, and a rooftop solar array that generates over 1.52MW of renewable energy. The facility also uses lithium-powered forklifts to support its low-emission operations.

According to Kylie Fraser, Managing Director of Maersk Oceania, the achievement reflects the company’s commitment to decarbonization and innovation. The NZGBC’s chief executive, Andrew Eagles, stated that the facility sets a strong precedent for sustainable industrial development in the country.
