MacGregor, a part of Cargotec, has secured an order from Hapag-Lloyd to deliver its “Hippo” fully automatic twistlocks for six of the carrier’s 19,900 TEU container vessels. The ACV-1 twistlocks are designed to improve operational efficiency and safety by automating the process of securing containers on board.
Enhancing Operations on A19-Series Vessels
The order, booked in the first quarter of 2025, will equip Hapag-Lloyd’s A19-series ships, which include the Al Nefud, Al Dahna Express, Barzan, Al Muraykh, Al Zubara, and Tihama. The first set of the twistlocks is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2025, with completion of the order expected by the fourth quarter of 2026.
According to Dr. Christoph Thiem, Director of Fleet Innovation & Technology at Hapag-Lloyd, the use of fully automatic twistlocks aligns with the company’s commitment to operational excellence and will help increase cargo capacity and reduce environmental impact. Magnus Sjöberg, Senior Vice President of MacGregor’s Equipment and Solutions Division, noted that the order strengthens the partnership between the two companies and supports Hapag-Lloyd’s leadership in the container shipping market.
By eliminating the need for manual operations, the new twistlocks are expected to significantly reduce time spent at port, contributing to faster turnaround times and a more efficient supply chain.
