Liebherr RTG Product Range

Liebherr Container Cranes has introduced its enhanced Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTG) crane portfolio, signifying a quarter-century of continuous improvement and innovation in RTG technology. Designed to meet the evolving demands of terminal operations, this next generation of Liebherr RTGs delivers optimized efficiency, reduced emissions, and superior performance, offering operators a flexible selection of solutions for their specific operational needs.

Comprehensive Range with Focus on Sustainability and Flexibility

The new RTG range comprises five base models, emphasizing sustainability and operational flexibility through a choice of electric and hybrid options, alongside a variable speed generator:

  • RTG-CB (Electric, Conductor Bar): A fully electric RTG with a continuous power supply, requiring fixed conductor bar infrastructure.
  • ERTG-CRD (Electric, Cable Reeling Drum): A fully electric RTG with a flexible power feed, utilizing a reeling drum for cable management.
  • RTG-HC (Hybrid, Capacitor): A hybrid RTG leveraging super-capacitors for energy recovery in combination with a smaller diesel generator. This model offers the lowest capital expenditure investment and fastest payback period for a hybrid system.
  • RTG-HB (Hybrid, Battery): A diesel-electric hybrid RTG utilizing battery energy storage, designed for optimal fuel savings and emissions reductions.
  • RTG-VSG (Variable Speed Genset): A fuel-efficient diesel RTG with optimized performance, reducing fuel consumption compared to standard diesel RTGs.

Mr. Charlie McCarthy, MD-Engineering at Liebherr Container Cranes, stated that this expanded range allows customers to advance their environmental ambitions and plan for a net-zero future. He highlighted that the electric RTGs operate with zero local emissions, while hybrid models deliver exceptional performance alongside significant reductions in emissions, running costs, and maintenance. The variable speed generator RTGs also provide substantial emission decreases compared to traditional diesel machines.

Liebherr’s proprietary software enables advanced simulations and energy modeling, predicting fuel and energy consumption for various power system configurations based on clients’ specific operational scenarios. This capability allows for accurate simulation of customer operations to explore and optimize alternative scenarios, and to conduct comprehensive economic assessments that identify the optimal machine for a customer’s setup, considering both cost and performance.

These diverse options collectively offer terminal operators a clear, sustainable path towards improved operational performance.

A Legacy of Progress and Future Vision

Since launching its first RTG, Liebherr has consistently led RTG development by integrating industry-leading innovations. The consistent adoption of an eight-rope reeving system from the outset has provided significantly improved load stability and reduced sway, facilitating precise container handling. This core benefit of stability and precision remains central to the RTG design and is complemented by the Liebherr Liduro drive system and a wide selection of power options. Productivity aids and automation features have also evolved, from early destination control to today’s advanced solutions that support full autonomy or remote operation, both wired and wireless.

Looking ahead, Liebherr anticipates continued rapid change, with the next 25 years promising even greater potential for innovation. Building on the progress of the past quarter-century, advances in automation, energy efficiency, and digital integration are expected to drive the future of container handling. While technology will continue to evolve, the core principles behind every Liebherr RTG – built to last with the highest standards of quality, precision, and reliability – will remain unchanged, ensuring maximum uptime and consistent performance in demanding port environments. Liebherr is committed to providing world-class service and support, delivering long-term value as the industry evolves.
