COSCO SHIPPING has officially inaugurated its North China Regional Headquarters and unveiled the “International Shipping Technology Center” at the Tianjin COSCO Plaza Complex, marking a significant expansion of its strategic footprint in northern China.

The inauguration ceremony, held on 11 June, was attended by key dignitaries including Mr. Zhang Gong, Mayor of Tianjin; Mr. Wan Min, Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING; and Mr. Zhu Bixin, President of COSCO SHIPPING. Mr. Zhang Yong, Executive Vice President of COSCO SHIPPING, and Mr. Wang Xiufeng, Vice Mayor of Tianjin, jointly unveiled the plaques for the new regional headquarters and innovation centre.

During the event, COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry also signed a framework cooperation agreement with the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone. The agreement focuses on large-scale marine engineering projects involving vessel repair, construction, and retrofitting. The deal was signed by Mr. Liang Yanfeng, Chairman of COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry, and Mr. Yin Xiaofeng, Director of the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone Management Committee.

Expanding Regional Reach and Industrial Synergy

Covering Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, and parts of Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, and Henan, the new North China headquarters will act as a strategic coordination hub. Mr. Zhu Bixin stated that the headquarters will enhance synergy across COSCO SHIPPING’s operations in shipping, ports, and logistics, while helping to lower logistics costs and drive regional economic development.

The launch of the “International Shipping Technology Center” signals a new phase in COSCO SHIPPING’s ambition to integrate port, industry, and urban development. The centre, a business complex that includes the first and second phases of Tianjin COSCO Plaza and its associated hotel facilities, is expected to be completed by 2028.

Driving Innovation in Shipping and Port Technology

Once operational, the technology centre will serve as a catalyst for upgrading Tianjin’s shipping sector and boosting innovation throughout the North China Economic Cluster. It will focus on the development of high-end industries such as maritime law, ship trading, shipping finance, and technology, forming a dynamic ecosystem around the concept of “shipping + technology.” The project is designed to support high-quality urban and industrial growth with a focus on smart solutions and technological empowerment.

New Engineering Base to Support Green Port Vision

The newly announced COSCO SHIPPING Large Vessel Offshore Engineering Repair and Construction Base project is set to enhance Tianjin’s position as a leading international shipping centre. Located in the Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone, the base will be configured with three docks and seven berths to support the repair and conversion of large vessels and marine engineering equipment.

In the future, the facility will also support marine engineering assembly and green shipbuilding, responding to market demands for sustainable maritime development. Once completed, the base is expected to elevate regional maritime service capabilities and accelerate Tianjin’s goal of becoming a world-class smart and green port.
