C.H. Robinson, a leading global logistics provider, has launched a new AI agent to assist shippers with the upcoming changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) system for less-than-truckload (LTL) freight. This proprietary technology automates the complex process of correctly classifying freight and helps shippers avoid delays and unexpected charges as the new system goes into effect.
A New Frontier in Automation
The new AI agent is designed to work with another of the company’s existing AI agents, marking an advancement in C.H. Robinson’s use of generative artificial intelligence. The agent can determine the correct class and code for a shipment, a task that can often be missing or incorrect on a tender, and assists in converting that request into a valid order within the company’s system.
According to the company, this automation has already helped increase C.H. Robinson’s overall LTL order automation from 50% to over 75%, particularly benefiting small-to-medium businesses that frequently use email to submit shipping requests.
Boosting Efficiency and Reducing Delays
The AI agent has been processing approximately 2,000 orders per day. While a person could spend 10 minutes or more manually looking up or confirming freight classifications, the AI agent can complete the task in about 10 seconds for a new type of freight and just three seconds after receiving additional training. This increased speed is estimated to save over 300 hours of manual labor per day, allowing C.H. Robinson’s team to focus on more strategic supply chain management for customers.
To ensure a smooth transition to the new NMFC system, which takes effect on July 19, C.H. Robinson advises customers to provide accurate weight and dimensions for their freight. The company has also collaborated with dimensioner technology vendors to provide discounts to customers.
