Remote Control Super Post-Panamax Fleet Reaches 17 Units to Support Mega-Vessel Handling
Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT) has announced the arrival of the final three remote control Super Post-Panamax quay cranes for its Terminal D facility at Laem Chabang Port. Delivered at the end of December 2025 via the heavy-load carrier De Qiang 66, these advanced units mark the completion of the terminal’s equipment rollout.
With this delivery, Terminal D now operates 17 Super Post-Panamax quay cranes along its 1,700-meter quay. The expansion enables the terminal to handle three mega-vessels and one feeder vessel simultaneously, providing a critical boost to Thailand’s Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) logistics infrastructure.

A Smart Terminal for a Net-Zero Future
The new cranes feature a 69-meter outreach and a 53-meter lift height, allowing them to service the world’s largest container ships with up to 24 rows of containers on deck. The final phase of development integrates several cutting-edge technologies:
- Remote Control Operations: Both quay and yard cranes are operated from a centralized control room, enhancing safety and operator ergonomics.
- Autonomous & Electric Fleet: Terminal D utilizes a mix of autonomous electric trucks (supplied by Sany) and human-driven electric vehicles, reducing Scope 1 emissions compared to traditional diesel operations.
- Full Automation Integration: The facility is supported by the n-Gen Terminal Operating System, automated gate lanes, and digitized workflows to maximize vessel productivity.

Celebrating 50 Million TEUs of Global Trade
The completion of Terminal D coincides with a major historical milestone for the company. On 4 December 2025, HPT officially surpassed 50 million TEUs of container throughput since it began operations in Thailand in 2002.
Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Thailand and Southeast Asia for Hutchison Ports, stated that the achievement reflects over two decades of dedication and innovation. With Terminal D now reaching its full annual operating capacity of 3.5 million TEUs, HPT is well-positioned to support the national goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The terminal is expected to be fully inaugurated in early 2026, serving as a flagship for smart, sustainable port management in Southeast Asia.
