Agreement Signed in Tanzania to Boost Seafarer Training and Career Development in East Africa

COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers and the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute (DMI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for maritime training cooperation on September 15, 2025, at the Tanzania Port Authority. The ceremony was jointly witnessed by Mr. Zhu Binxin, Director of the Board and President of COSCO SHIPPING, and Professor Godius Kahyarara, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport of Tanzania.

The MoU was formally signed by Mr. Huang Nan, Director and President of COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers, and Professor Tumaini S. Gurumo, President of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute. DMI also presented a commemorative plaque to COSCO SHIPPING in recognition of its support for this collaboration in maritime training and career development.

Key Pillars of Cooperation

Under the agreement, COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers will leverage its extensive fleet resources and mature experience in international shipping operation and management to provide crucial support to DMI students and current Tanzanian seafarers. The support includes:

  • Maritime Internships and Practical Onboard Training Sessions for DMI students.
  • Career Development Support for DMI students.
  • Training Sessions for current seafarers.

The collaboration aims to help Tanzania cultivate maritime professionals equipped with both international perspectives and practical expertise, thereby supporting the sustainable development of the shipping industry in Tanzania and the wider East African region.

This initiative is a concrete follow-up to the consensus reached between the Tanzanian Minister of Transport and COSCO SHIPPING during the Minister’s visit to China in 2024. It demonstrates COSCO SHIPPING Specialized Carriers’ proactive use of its professional strengths to advance ESG principles and fulfill social responsibilities through talent cultivation, adding new dimensions to the China-Tanzania Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the maritime sector.
