Interasia Lines has reached a major milestone in its fleet modernization program with the successful keel laying of its newest 7,000 TEU container vessel (Hull No. 1656). Held at the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipyard (SWS), the ceremony marks the official start of the vessel’s assembly in the building dock, following the steel-cutting phase that began in August 2025.
The event was attended by Mr. Li Zhizhong, Director of SWS, and Mr. Leon Liu, on-site Supervising Manager for Interasia Lines. The laying of the first major hull block is a centuries-old maritime tradition believed to bring good fortune to the ship’s construction and its future crew.
Strategic Growth and Fleet Modernization
This 7,000 TEU vessel is part of Interasia’s aggressive expansion strategy. Having surpassed 1 million TEUs in annual traffic for the first time in 2025, the company is now scaling its capacity to meet rising demand across its core Intra-Asia network and expanding services to India and East Africa.
Key Vessel Specifications:
- Capacity: 7,092 TEU
- Design: SDARI Sealion 7000 (optimised for fuel efficiency and low carbon emissions)
- Delivery Timeline: Scheduled for completion in June 2026
- Environmental Impact: The vessel features advanced hull coatings and engine management systems to align with Interasia’s commitment to “environmentally responsible shipping.”

Expanding the Intra-Asia Land-Sea Bridge
The upcoming delivery in mid-2026 will allow Interasia to deploy larger, more efficient tonnage on its high-growth routes, such as the newly launched KCI (Korea-China-Indonesia) service. By introducing 7,000 TEU vessels into a fleet that historically relied on smaller feeder ships, Interasia is positioning itself to compete on medium-haul corridors while maintaining the agility needed for regional port calls.
This investment underscores the carrier’s transition from a regional feeder operator into a major integrated player in the Asian maritime ecosystem.
