COSCO SHIPPING Biofuel Bunkering Fujian Hong Kong

COSCO SHIPPING Lines vessels COSCO ASIA and NEW LOS ANGELES have set new records for biofuel bunkering. COSCO ASIA bunkered 2,400 tons of B24 marine biofuel oil at Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal, establishing a new single-refueling record for Fujian Port. NEW LOS ANGELES refueled with 5,400 tons at the Hong Kong terminal, marking a record for biofuel oil refueling in Hong Kong.

The Significance of B24 Marine Biofuel Oil

B24 marine biofuel oil is a blend of 24% sustainable biodiesel and 76% conventional low-sulfur fuel oil. This biofuel is produced from widely available and renewable feedstock, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions from ships. The use of B24 marine biofuel oil is projected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 20%, playing a crucial role in the shipping industry’s transition to greener operations.

COSCO SHIPPING’s Commitment to Green Practices

COSCO SHIPPING is actively pursuing green and low-carbon practices, including the development of dual-fuel-powered vessels and the promotion of biofuel oil. The company is actively investigating the widespread application of biofuels in maritime transportation to drive the industry’s shift towards sustainability.

Previous Biofuel Initiatives

  • In June 2024, COSCO ASIA achieved a record by bunkering 3,850 tons of B24 biofuel oil at Shekou Port in Shenzhen, then the largest single marine biofuel bunkering in China.
  • In August 2024, OOCL, a COSCO SHIPPING Holdings subsidiary, partnered to launch a low-carbon shipping initiative, using B24 biofuel to reduce carbon emissions across the supply chain.
  • In September 2024, the XIN CHI WAN, another COSCO SHIPPING Holdings vessel, successfully refueled with B24 marine biofuel oil, marking Fujian’s first bonded biofuel bunkering order for international vessels.

COSCO SHIPPING’s continued efforts in bunkering biofuels and conducting sea trials demonstrate the company’s commitment to accelerating the transition towards low-carbon and sustainable shipping.
