Strategic Investment to Shift Freight from Road to Rail and Reduce Port Congestion
DP World has officially commenced construction on the Fremantle Rail Interchange, a critical $18 million infrastructure project designed to overhaul Western Australia’s freight network. The groundbreaking ceremony, held in December 2025, was attended by Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Rita Saffioti, highlighting the project’s importance to the state’s long-term economic strategy.
The development will establish a dedicated rail gate connection linking DP World’s Fremantle container operations directly with the North Quay Rail Terminal. This streamlined interface is expected to eliminate more than 20,000 truck movements per year on internal port roads, significantly easing local traffic and improving road safety.
Driving Productivity and Sustainability
A primary goal of the interchange is to facilitate a major modal shift in how cargo moves through the region. DP World and the State Government aim to increase the share of freight moved by rail from 22% to 33%.
This shift is projected to deliver several key benefits:
- Congestion Relief: Vital for managing the upcoming closure of the Fremantle Traffic Bridge on 1 February 2026, which is expected to redirect heavy vehicle traffic to surrounding corridors.
- Environmental Impact: Reducing heavy truck reliance will lead to a measurable decrease in carbon emissions and road wear.
- Cost Efficiency: Streamlined container transfers will offer Western Australian exporters and importers a more reliable and cost-effective logistics pathway.
Part of a National Infrastructure Vision
The Fremantle project is a component of DP World’s broader $1 billion commitment to upgrade Australia’s port infrastructure by 2028. This national program includes major rail capacity expansions in Sydney and automated terminal upgrades in Brisbane, all aimed at creating a more resilient, multimodal supply chain.
Nicolaj Noes, Executive Vice President, Oceania at DP World, stated that the new rail gate connection is a prime example of industry and government collaboration. The project is expected to create over 50 local jobs during its construction and subsequent operation, further reinforcing Fremantle’s status as a vital gateway for international trade.
By integrating port, rail, and landside logistics, DP World continues to build a connected network that provides faster and more sustainable freight solutions across Australia and New Zealand.
