CEVA Logistics Secure Maritime Link EV Batteries Mainland Europe

CEVA Logistics has announced the launch of a specialized maritime transport service designed to safely ship used lithium-ion batteries from island territories to recycling centers in continental Europe. Operational as of March 2026, the service utilizes CMA CGM shipping lines and features a fleet of specifically adapted containers to manage the complexities of battery reverse logistics.

This solution addresses a critical gap for isolated geographies that lack local recycling infrastructure, ensuring that used energy storage systems are processed in accordance with strict European environmental regulations.

Engineering Maximum Safety for Battery Transit

To neutralize the risks associated with the potential instability of used lithium-ion cells, CEVA has developed a rigorous, multi-layered containment strategy:

  • Double-Container System: Batteries are first consolidated into high-security containment vaults. These vaults are then loaded into larger, custom-designed shipping containers.
  • Specialized Capacity: Each shipping container accommodates four vaults, providing a transport capacity of approximately six tons per container.
  • Expert Oversight: Every shipment is managed by technicians trained in electrical, chemical, and fire safety. They oversee the packing and loading process to ensure all cargo remains secure during the voyage.

Solving the Logistics Crisis for Island Territories

As the demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and energy storage continues to rise, island nations have faced a mounting challenge: how to dispose of batteries that have reached the end of their lifecycle.

By opening up all CMA CGM shipping lines to this service, CEVA provides a reliable “off-island” corridor. This prevents the accumulation of hazardous waste in sensitive island environments and facilitates the transfer of materials to mainland facilities capable of dismantling, diagnosing, and recycling the units into a circular value chain.

A Comprehensive Reverse Logistics Ecosystem

The launch of this maritime service marks the latest expansion of CEVA’s 2025 Reverse Logistics initiative. The company now offers a full-spectrum solution for the battery sector, including:

  • Collection and Handling: Safe pickup from the source.
  • Multimodal Transport: Seamless transitions between sea and road.
  • Battery Logistics Centers: Temporary storage and expert diagnosis across Europe.
  • Circular Dismantling: Preparing units for either a “second life” in energy storage or raw material recovery.

Eric Dessupoiu, VP Finished Vehicle Logistics at CEVA Logistics, emphasized that making the battery sector more circular is a primary goal for the company. By bridging the gap between isolated territories and European recycling hubs, CEVA is reinforcing the infrastructure necessary for a sustainable, low-carbon automotive future.
