Hapag-Lloyd and the Government of India have signed three landmark Letters of Intent (LOI) to significantly deepen their maritime cooperation. The agreements, signed by Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen and India’s Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, focus on three core pillars: ship reflagging, sustainable recycling, and major infrastructure investment.
This partnership aligns with India’s rapid expansion of its shipping and logistics sector, positioning the country as a critical hub in the global supply chain.
Reflagging and National Integration
As a show of commitment to the Indian maritime registry, Hapag-Lloyd intends to explore the reflagging of up to four vessels under the Indian flag. While specific vessel profiles and timelines are currently being assessed, this move would integrate Hapag-Lloyd more deeply into the national shipping landscape.
Building a Global Standard for Ship Recycling
A major component of the LOI involves the development of a world-class, sustainable ship recycling ecosystem in India. Hapag-Lloyd aims to support the creation of capacity for recycling up to 100 vessels, ensuring the process meets the highest environmental and safety benchmarks.
Key Sustainability Goals:
- EU Standard Alignment: The project aims to align Indian recycling facilities with the EU Ship Recycling Regulation (SRR), the current gold standard for the industry.
- Responsible End-of-Life Management: Ensuring that vessels are decommissioned safely, protecting both workers and the local environment.
Strategic Investment in Vadhavan Port
Hapag-Lloyd is also set to contribute its global terminal expertise to the development of Vadhavan Port. Working in collaboration with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, this project is one of India’s most significant upcoming infrastructure milestones.
Dheeraj Bhatia, CEO of Hanseatic Global Terminals and Hapag-Lloyd Executive Board member, noted that Vadhavan Port has the potential to drastically enhance India’s role in global trade. By investing in this “future-ready” infrastructure, Hapag-Lloyd is helping to build the capacity needed to handle the next generation of ultra-large container vessels.
A Long-Term Commitment to Growth
India remains one of the most vital growth markets for Hapag-Lloyd. These agreements solidify a relationship that has spanned decades, ensuring that the carrier continues to expand its operational footprint through strategic partnerships that benefit both the Indian economy and global logistics networks.
