Carrier Transicold Enhancement Program Extend Reefer Fleet Life

Strategic Initiative Targets Mid-Life PrimeLINE Units for Efficiency and Emissions Reduction

Carrier Transicold has introduced the Reefer Enhancement and Next-life (REN) Program, a key strategic development within its Transform Line portfolio. This solution is specifically designed to address mid-life refrigerated PrimeLINE® units, typically those operating between six and ten years, by extending their service life by up to three years. The core aim is to significantly uplift energy efficiency and reduce overall operational expenditure for global transport refrigeration customers.

Focused Upgrades Deliver Sustainable Performance

The cornerstone of the REN Program lies in mechanical and technical modernisation. Upgrades encompass the integration of high-efficiency EDGE compressors, optimised coils, and specialised refrigerant retrofit kits. These improvements are engineered to yield substantial savings in both fuel and maintenance costs. Furthermore, the refrigerant retrofit option provides a pathway for transitioning away from the higher Global Warming Potential (GWP) R-134a to the lower-GWP alternative, R-513a. With the R-513a blend having a GWP of approximately 573, compared to R-134a’s 1,300, this transition dramatically aids customers in lowering their carbon footprint.

To complement the physical enhancements, customers have the option to subscribe to Lynx™ Fleet, Carrier’s advanced telematics solution. This digital layer facilitates heightened operational visibility, enabling predictive maintenance capabilities and strengthening overall efficiency in fleet management.

Maximizing Asset Value and Regulatory Compliance

By choosing the REN Program, shipping lines and leasing companies are empowered to maximise the utilisation of their existing refrigerated container assets, operating them more reliably and sustainably without resorting to costly full equipment replacement.

The collective benefits of enhanced energy efficiency and lower-GWP refrigerant use are critical for supporting compliance with increasingly rigorous environmental legislation, including the expanded scope of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), which now mandates emissions accountability for the maritime industry.

Pablo Martinez, Senior Director, Aftermarket and Services, Carrier Climate Solutions Transportation, noted the initiative is pivotal for the maritime sector, stating, “Our Reefer Enhancement and Next-life Program enables shipping lines and leasing companies to easily enhance the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of their current fleets.” With an extensive global installed base of close to one million reefers, Carrier anticipates that the REN Program will drive significant operational and environmental improvements across the entire industry.
