Konecranes RTGs to Anchor Container Handling at Montgomery ICTF Amid Volume Surge

The Alabama Port Authority has placed an order for two Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes to serve its new intermodal facility in Montgomery, Alabama. The deal, officially booked in the third quarter of 2025, marks a strategic move to bolster the port’s growing container volumes, with delivery of the new equipment scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.

Alabama’s Port of Mobile has experienced significant growth in container traffic, with volumes increasing from approximately 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to over 563,000 TEUs in 2023. To manage and facilitate further expansion, the Port Authority is actively developing the Montgomery Intermodal Container Transfer Facility (ICTF). The two new Konecranes RTGs are set to form the essential backbone for container handling operations at the ICTF, supporting efficient transfers between rail and truck transportation modes.

Smart Features Ensure Safety and Automation Readiness

The RTGs specified for the Montgomery facility will be equipped with a suite of advanced features designed to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and readiness for future automation. Key features include:

  • Active Load Control: A standard feature that actively works to prevent container sway during lifting and transit.
  • Smart Features: A range of technologies that make operations faster and safer, including Auto-steering, Auto-positioning, and Auto-TOS Reporting for seamless integration with the terminal operating system.
  • Safety and Efficiency: Stack Collision Prevention and Auto Path Optimizing will improve overall yard safety and productivity, while Auto-Truck Guiding will ensure accurate positioning of road trucks for streamlined pick-up and drop-off processes.

This investment in RTGs marks the first time the Alabama Port Authority has chosen this type of Konecranes equipment, expanding a relationship that originated in 2001 with the delivery of a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbor Crane, which remains operational today.

Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, expressed confidence in the decision: “We’ve seen how durable and dependable Konecranes technology is in our daily operations. This track record gave us the confidence to expand the relationship with these RTGs. The new cranes will set the standard for efficiency and handling capacity as we launch the intermodal terminal and scale up operations.”

Alan Garcia, Director Regional Sales Americas, Konecranes, Port Solutions, emphasised the company’s role: “The agreement shows that when performance and reliability are critical – customers turn to Konecranes. We’re proud to support the Alabama Port Authority in this ambitious greenfield project.”
