Pacific International Lines (PIL) marked a key milestone in its fleet renewal program as its new 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Elok, made its maiden call to Singapore on July 15.
To commemorate the occasion, port operator PSA Singapore presented a ceremonial plaque to Kota Elok’s Master, Capt. Kan Liang, aboard the ship.
First Vessel in Fleet Certified to New IACS Cyber Security Standards
During the Singapore call, Kota Elok also became the first PIL vessel to earn Lloyd’s Register certification for compliance with the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) Unified Requirements UR E26 and UR E27.
These mandatory cyber resilience standards apply to newbuild vessels contracted from July 1, 2024 onward:
- UR E26 focuses on the overall cyber resilience of the vessel as an integrated system.
- UR E27 ensures that individual onboard equipment and sub-systems incorporate built-in cyber security protections from the design phase.
The certification was achieved through close coordination between PIL, shipbuilder Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding, classification society Lloyd’s Register, specialist testing organizations, and equipment suppliers to integrate cyber defense mechanisms throughout design and construction.
Fleet Modernization and Decarbonization Features
Kota Elok is the first of 13 new 13,000 TEU dual-fuel container ships slated to join PIL’s fleet. The vessel is engineered to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as low-sulfur fuel oil, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions on long-haul routes.
To maximize operational efficiency and lower fuel consumption, the ship incorporates several eco-friendly features:
- Energy-saving hull and propulsion designs
- Digital automation and performance monitoring technologies
- An aerodynamic bow windshield designed to minimize wind drag over forward container stacks
Deployment on Asia-South America Trade Lane
Following its maiden port call in Singapore, Kota Elok continues its inaugural voyage on PIL’s East Coast Service 1 (ES1) route. The vessel will call at major ports in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina before returning to Asia.
