Varner, one of the leading fashion groups in the Nordic region, has enhanced its supply chain resilience and efficiency through a closer partnership with APM Terminals in Gothenburg. This collaboration has allowed the company to better navigate recent global shipping disruptions, particularly those in the Red Sea, by leveraging the terminal’s extensive logistical options.

Navigating Global Disruptions

Facing extended lead times and rising costs due to geopolitical events, Varner, which owns brands like Bik Bok and Dressmann, was challenged to maintain its regular flow of goods from Asia. The company’s supply chain director, Anders Eriksson, noted that at times, they were forced to use more expensive and less sustainable air transport to meet customer demand. This necessitated a more stable and reliable solution.

The APM Terminals Partnership

Varner intensified its collaboration with APM Terminals Gothenburg, which provided access to a wider range of services, including alliances with MSC’s Swan service and the Gemini Cooperation involving Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd. This gave Varner greater flexibility and options, such as immediate docking and hub-and-spoke solutions, which help route cargo through central ports for efficient regional distribution.

Anna Sahlén, Varner’s import manager, highlighted the importance of a properly functioning shipping route to Gothenburg for their supply chain. She noted that the proactive approach by APM Terminals has been essential to meeting their needs.

Improved Reliability and Customer Experience

The partnership has resulted in improved reliability and more predictable deliveries for Varner. This has been particularly beneficial for the company’s e-commerce operations, especially following the completion of a new Autostore solution in 2023. Sahlén explained that this new system allows them to handle increased volumes and offer faster deliveries, with many online customers now receiving their orders just one day after placing them. The company looks forward to continuing its cooperation with APM Terminals to maintain these benefits.
