Laem Chabang Port commits to driving Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) initiatives, moving forward to deliver sustainable development and initiating the port’s Phase 3 Development project.

Under the Port Authority of Thailand’s management, Laem Chabang Port has been the critical gateway for international trade between Thailand and the global market for several decades. To this day, the port is still moving forward, continuously developing and improving its infrastructure. Currently, Laem Chabang Port is building under the Phase 3 Development project to enhance container and large vessel capacity in response to customer demand in transportation and logistics industries domestically and globally.

However, developing infrastructure quality and efficiency isn’t the only target Laem Chabang Port commits to; the port also emphasizes people’s quality of life and environmental sustainability as equally important issues. Therefore, Laem Chabang Port commits to enhancing ESG initiatives along with the Phase 3 Development project to drive Thailand’s overall economy and improve the local community’s quality of life.

We spoke with Sub Lt. Rutthakorn Khiewpaisal, Administration 16, Attached to the Director General of the Port Authority of Thailand, Director of Laem Chabang Port, to deep dive into the port’s vision of sustainable organization development, its ESG agenda, and get an update on Laem Chabang Port’s Phase 3 Development project.

Environmental, Social, and Governance Initiatives

Laem Chabang Port is committed to sustainable development that covers environmental, social, and governance aspects. With a focus on the surrounding community and environment, the port has hired a professional team of consultants and an external environmental third party to strictly track and examine the Phase 3 Development project’s operation and initiative. Additionally, an environmental committee of experts and representatives from the project’s surrounding community has been set up to supervise the initiative and ensure it has the least environmental impact. Laem Chabang Port aims to enhance its environment-friendly initiatives by setting additional ecological agendas.

“Environmental concerns have always been a top priority for the development of Laem Chabang Port. Our goal is to minimize the impact of the Phase 3 Development project on the environment as much as possible, to ensure sustainable development and reduce any issues that may contribute to global warming, which is currently a critical issue. As a result, Laem Chabang Port has established strict environmental policies. All initiatives must consider the impact on the surrounding environment and the local community and include preventative and remedial measures to mitigate any adverse effects of the organization’s business development plan. Furthermore, the organization’s business initiatives must comply with domestic and international environmental regulations,” said Mr. Khiewpaisal.

“Laem Chabang Port has implemented a set of initiatives to monitor and evaluate their environmental impact. These initiatives include consistent and continuous planning of environmental projects. The port also encourages employees, customers, private sectors, and the community to participate in the organization’s environmental management efforts. These strict agendas are designed to help Laem Chabang Port reduce its environmental impact in line with its sustainability development targets,” he added.

Additionally, the Port Authority of Thailand will support resources, covering budget, time, personnel, equipment, and technologies properly, ensuring these agendas can achieve the organization’s objectives efficiently and sustainably.

Corporate Social Responsibility Efforts

Besides environmental issues, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is another issue that Laem Chabang Port significantly emphasizes, particularly in the local community surrounding Laem Chabang Port, near the Phase 3 Development project. Laem Chabang Port aims to enhance the well-being of this community, ensuring infrastructure and business development grow together with people’s well-being.

“Laem Chabang Port emphasizes and considers the social responsibility issue crucially, particularly in the local community and society surrounding the port. Therefore, CSR initiatives are very significant in achieving this target. Laem Chabang Port is initiating 9 CSR initiatives, covering education, social health and safety, and environmental issues,” Mr. Khiewpaisal revealed.

Laem Chabang Port’s 9 CSR initiatives include three education initiatives, such as English development for the local youth surrounding the port initiative, the sustainability scholarship initiative, and music skills development for the students initiative, five social health and safety initiatives, such as career development and income enhancement initiative, Laem Chabang Port caring for the community health initiative, safety culture reinforcement initiative, Laem Chabang Port’s devoting blood donation initiative, and community relationship seminar initiative, and an environmental initiative which is Laem Chabang mangrove and sea coast preserving initiative.

“Every initiative is approved by the Subcommittee of Community and Society Surrounding Leam Chabang Port. Laem Chabang Port has also continuously consulted with the Subcommittee to be informed and solve the problems together. This marks another cooperation between Laem Chabang Port and the local community segment to achieve the target of living happily together,” Mr. Khiewpaisal added about the initiatives.

Phase 3 Construction Updates

With the increasing rate of current container capacity, the Phase 3 Development project is considered an important big project for Laem Chabang Port, which not only helps the port be capable of increasing maritime transportation capacity sufficiently but also enhances competitive capabilities with other ports in Asia, including driving Thailand’s total economic efficiently.

“Currently, Laem Chabang Port is accelerating the Phase 3 Development Part 1 project for the sea construction, which has a delivery deadline for Area 3’s Terminal F as the last reclamation area, expected to finish the initiative within June 2026 to be capable of launching Laem Chabang Port Phase 3 services within the due date set within 2027,” Mr. Khiewpaisal explained.

Integrate Social Care for Corporate Success

Besides the Phase 3 Development project under initiation, Laem Chabang Port also has another project aimed to initiate this year: the B Terminal Merging project, which is expected to start in October – November.

In conclusion, overall operations in every aspect of the Laem Chabang Port, covering environmental agenda, CSR initiatives, and progress in the Phase 3 Development project, mark the determination and ambition to move forward toward the success of Laem Chabang Port as a role model organization that emphasizes organization’s turnover in the same value as environment and society sustainability, furthermore, reflecting that the initiations to achieve the targets in these three aspects can be moved forward together seamlessly.
