Leading port operator Westports Malaysia officially welcomed Regional Container Lines’ (RCL) newly deployed container vessel, the Varanya Bhum, during her maiden port call on 7 May 2026. Featuring a nominal carrying capacity of 12,000 TEUs, the arrival of the large-scale vessel highlights Port Klang’s infrastructure capability to handle ultra-large container ships efficiently.
The maiden call represents a significant capacity upgrade for RCL’s scheduled maritime rotations, supporting expanding commercial trade volumes and strengthening intermodal connections across key manufacturing and consumer hubs.

Strengthening the RWA2 China-West Asia Service Network
The deployment of the Varanya Bhum directly supports the ongoing enhancement of RCL’s specialized RWA2 Service (RCL China West Asia). This high-volume maritime loop is engineered to link key trading gateways across China, Southeast Asia, India, and Pakistan.
By inserting larger tonnage into this service corridor, the line provides regional importers and exporters with greater slot availability, reliable weekly transit schedules, and direct access to major transshipment hubs. The increased capacity arrives amid sustained demand for robust container shipping options linking East Asian production centers with growing consumer markets in Western Asia and the Indian subcontinent.

Commemorative Plaque Exchange Ceremony
To mark the vessel’s inaugural berthing at the terminal, Westports executives hosted a traditional plaque exchange ceremony on board the ship. The event was attended by senior management representatives from both the port authority and the ocean carrier:
- Westports Malaysia: Represented by Naresh (Marketing Manager) and K. Gunalan (Operations Manager), who coordinated the terminal handling workflows to ensure rapid container crane productivity.
- Regional Container Lines (RCL): Represented by Wong Davin (Regional Finance Head for Southeast Asia), Wilson (Commercial Manager), and vessel Master Capt. Phattarawuth Somboon.
The corporate exchange highlights the long-term operational collaboration between Westports and regional carriers like RCL, focusing on minimizing vessel turnaround times, optimizing container yard logistics, and lowering total port stay costs for modern, high-capacity fleets.
