The Legacy Manual Weighing Scale System Process

The truck and container weighing process is critical in the logistics industry. These scales are found at factories, seaports, and warehouses, especially for import-export warehouse operations like at SCGL ESC.

During the normal weighing process, when the truck arrives at the weighing bridge, the station officer will manually record information into the Weighing Scale Software, including the truck weight retrieved from the loadcell and truck license plate number and the container number. After the data is confirmed, the driver can drive out of the weighing bridge, completing the process.

However, the legacy manual process leads to possible human error, not to mention that this is a low-value task wasting valuable human resources with low process visibility for central operation management teams. Furthermore, with the legacy software installed at each weighing scale, it creates difficulty for the operator to integrate with other platforms or provide digital and customized reports for further analytics and other process optimization. These obstacles from the legacy operation impose barriers for the company to achieve its full performance.

Retrofitting the Process with Automation

To transform the legacy weighing scale operation, retrofitting the existing process with an add-on solution is the ideal method for the process of digitization due to the high operational practicality as most of the operation sites already have an existing truck scale station along with a weighing scale software and related facilities, e.g., a guard post or booth gate station.

To achieve the weighing process transformation at SCGL ESC, ‘Verily Vision Truck Weighing Scale Automation’ has been proposed to integrate with the legacy operation with a series of technology and equipment to enable an automatic process as follow

  • Automatic Truck License Plate Recognition CCTV system with Thai province feature
  • Automatic Container Number Recognition CCTV system
  • Management and monitoring interface
  • System integration with existing ESC Weight Scale Software
  • Data integration and validation with existing ESC Warehouse Management System

The process transformation goals

  • Enhancing Operation Efficiency
  • Optimizing Human Resource Management
  • Obtaining Standardized Image Record
  • Increasing Operation Process Visibility
  • Enhancing Data Integration Capability

Operation and Technology Integration Challenges

From our technology integration experience, to achieve transformation with optimal outcomes, the challenges lie in

  • solution optimization ensuring the highest system performance possible
  • seamless process integration and trial run, guaranteeing smooth operation flow after implementation

In SCGL ESC’s case, Verily Vision’s teams collaborated with the ESC warehouse team for a preliminary onsite survey and existing process analysis to design an appropriate transformation and implementation plan.

For solution optimization, a customized CCTV installation model is required with on-roof CCTV installation and A.I. software engine optimization to best fit ESC operational environment and space limitation at container weight scale station.

For seamless process integration and trial run, with our goal to create less operation interruption as possible, Verily Vision’s solution is integrated with the existing ESC Weight Scale Software and Warehouse Management System via customized API for data exchange. Furthermore, since delivering measurable results is one of Verily Vision’s core commitments to every client, new process trial run and system accuracy assessments are conducted in an actual operating environment to guarantee desired transformation project outcomes.

The New SCGL ESC Automatic Weight Scale

With the implementation and integration of Verily Visions automatic weighing scale solution, when the truck arrives at the weighing scale, the CCTV cameras will automatically capture and recognize the truck’s license plate, including Thai province, along with the container number information with evidence image snapshots of the truck’s license plate and cargo container.

Then the data is submitted to existing ESC Weight Scale Software and validated with pre-advised data from ESC Warehouse Management System. After the information is confirmed, the transaction and image will be recorded in a ready-to-use database for reporting and further data usage.

Lastly, with Verily Vision’s central weighing scale system display interface, ESC warehouse management teams can access and observe real-time operation via all CCTV cameras for operation security and process visibility purposes.

The Retrofitting Outcomes

As SCGL ESC upgraded its manual weight scale operation to automation with Verily Vision’s weighing scale automation solution integrated with the existing protocol and management system, the newly optimized process can provide warehouse operators with the value and opportunity to

  • Increase valuable use cases of pre-registered data for operation optimization
  • Achieve truck data entry accuracy greater than 95.00% with An Automatic Truck License Plate and Container Number Recognition, and CCTV integrated with existing truck weight scale software
  • Reduce manual data entry operation time with automatic process integrated with Warehouse Management System (WMS) Optimize human resource management with staff rotation from low-value assignment
  • Increase process visibility with a central operation monitoring interface
  • Obtain ready-to-use and organized digital operation report with flexibility for data integration with other management software and platforms

Looking Ahead to Achieving Higher Operation Performance with An Automatic Document Scanner and Service Kiosk

For truck weighing scale operation with more sophisticated processes such as cargo export and import document verification and activity confirmation, an Automatic Document Scanner and Driver Self-Service Kiosk are recommended to deliver seamless automatic and semi-automatic processes.

With an automatic document scanner powered by Verily Vision’s OCR technology, the information from the scanned document is automatically extracted and submitted to verify with a management system such as weighing scale software and Transportation Management System (TMS) or Warehouse Management System (WMS), reducing manual process for data input and human error.

Providing 2-way communication via driver self-service kiosk system, the truck driver can do the necessary operational activity with kiosk display interface to fill in the additional required information and communicate with command centre for troubleshooting process.
