The Rhenus Group has achieved significant recognition for its pioneering work in sustainable inland shipping. The first of its three hydrogen and battery-electric propulsion barges has received the Platinum Label for environmentally friendly shipping, a distinction awarded to only 19 European inland waterway vessels. Furthermore, it was honored with the Innovation Award for Inland Navigation by the Allianz ESA 2024 for its groundbreaking sustainable concepts.
Following a successful testing phase, the vessel, “Mannheim I+II,” has been confirmed to meet all construction and safety requirements, paving the way for regular operations on European waterways.
Platinum Label and Green Award Recognition
The “Mannheim I+II” push barge combination is the first of its kind in the world to receive the exclusive Platinum Label, highlighting Rhenus Group’s commitment to a sustainable future in shipping. The vessel also earned the Green Award in the Gold category, signifying compliance with the highest environmental standards.
In September 2024, the Rhenus Group and its subsidiaries, Rhenus PartnerShip and Contargo, were recognized with the Allianz ESA 2024 Innovation Award for sustainable concepts in shipbuilding and trimodal transport, acknowledging the vessel’s groundbreaking technology and contribution to environmentally friendly inland transport.
Successful Testing Phase
The “Mannheim I+II” has successfully completed its road test, which included rigorous trials such as zigzag and crash-stop maneuvers to ensure stability and safety. The maximum tonnage capacity for the push barge combination was also determined through towing tests.
The testing phase was conducted in close collaboration with Lloyd’s Register, Office Rotterdam, to meet the requirements for dangerous goods transport approval. The vessel has now received a provisional certificate of registry and began its first voyage with containers towards the end of 2024.
This achievement underscores Rhenus Group’s dedication to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the inland shipping industry.
