PSA Antwerp (PSAA) has joined the Zero Emission Port Alliance (ZEPA), a global coalition of terminal operators, manufacturers, and ports committed to accelerating the transition to net-zero emissions. The move aligns with PSA Group’s broader climate goals of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2050.
A key focus for PSA Antwerp is the decarbonization of its straddle carrier fleet, which is responsible for the majority of the company’s direct emissions in Belgium. As part of its Green Straddle Carrier Program, PSAA is evaluating fully electric straddle carriers as a potential solution.
Overcoming Challenges Through Collaboration
The shift to zero-emission port equipment presents significant technical and financial challenges. Edward Tah, Managing Director of PSA Belgium, noted that equipment from different manufacturers often lacks interoperability, and there are very few standardized charging solutions available. The required investment is also significant.
By joining ZEPA, PSAA aims to collaborate with other industry leaders to scale up zero-emission equipment. The alliance’s focus on working across the entire value chain—from terminals to manufacturers and ports—is seen as essential to overcoming these hurdles.
