Pacific International Lines (PIL) has officially named its first 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel containership, the Kota Oasis. The naming ceremony, held at the Yangzijiang Shipbuilding yard in China, was officiated by Mrs. Cindy Chang, wife of Mr. Peter Chang, PIL’s Deputy Chairman. This vessel marks PIL’s fifth LNG dual-fuel vessel delivered since October 2024, signifying a major step in the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Advancing Fleet Optimization and Sustainability
The Kota Oasis is the lead vessel in a series of four 8,200 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessels, designated as the “O” Class, ordered by PIL from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding. These newbuilds are a crucial part of PIL’s long-term strategy to optimize its network deployment, enhance operational efficiency, and increase sustainability across its fleet.
Mr. Lars Kastrup, CEO of PIL, emphasized the significance of the Kota Oasis, stating, “This vessel represents another significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability and operational excellence.” He highlighted PIL’s pioneering role as the first Asian container shipping line to invest in LNG dual-fuel ships in 2022, underscoring their commitment to reducing their environmental footprint and achieving a net-zero emissions target by 2050.
The “O” Class vessels, along with the recently delivered 14,000 TEU “E” class vessels, are expected to play a vital role in enhancing PIL’s global connectivity and meeting evolving customer needs.
Innovative Green Technologies
The name “Kota Oasis” symbolizes a haven of sustainability and innovation within the maritime industry, reflecting PIL’s vision for a greener future in shipping.
Beyond being LNG-powered, PIL’s “O” Class vessels are designed with advanced features for enhanced environmental performance. They are capable of utilizing greener bio-methane fuels and are equipped with Win-GD’s XDF engines featuring iCER (Intelligent Control by Exhaust Recycling), which significantly reduce methane emissions. Furthermore, these vessels are built with ammonia intermediate-ready fuel tanks, future-proofing them for potential conversion to ammonia fuel.
The Kota Oasis is PIL’s fifth LNG-powered vessel to join its fleet, following four 14,000 TEU LNG vessels delivered since last year. PIL currently has another 13 LNG dual-fuel vessels on order, with deliveries scheduled over the next few years, reinforcing its position at the forefront of sustainable shipping.
