Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd. (OOCL) has officially held the naming ceremony for the OOCL Wisdom, marking the introduction of the carrier’s first methanol dual-fuel container vessel. The vessel represents the first unit in a scheduled series of seven identical mega-ships custom-built for the line.
The ceremony was conducted at the shipyard of Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., Ltd. (NACKS). Cao Yanping, Director of Fujian Yaohua Industrial Village Development Co., Ltd., performed the official naming honors and bestowed traditional blessings upon the vessel in the presence of international maritime executives and supply chain partners.
Engineering Specifications of a Clean-Energy Maritime Giant
Stretching 399.99 meters in length and 61.3 meters in width, the OOCL Wisdom features a maximum carrying capacity of 24,168 TEUs, establishing it as the world’s largest methanol-powered container vessel currently in service.

To achieve comprehensive low-carbon operations, the ship transitions entirely away from standalone fossil fuel systems. The main propulsion engines, auxiliary power generators, and onboard boilers are all fully integrated with methanol dual-fuel systems, allowing the vessel to run interchangeably on green methanol or conventional marine fuel. When operating on green methanol across its entire lifecycle, the ship achieves near carbon-neutral navigation, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 150,000 tonnes annually while lowering sulfur oxide emissions to near-zero levels.
Full-Stack Intelligent Automation and Structural Monitoring
Beyond its alternative fuel systems, the vessel integrates a suite of automated digital technologies independently developed by COSCO SHIPPING to maximize operational energy efficiency:
- Intelligent Energy Efficiency Management: Automated systems continuously monitor and optimize vessel speed and engine power based on real-time deadweight and active sea conditions.
- Permanent Magnet Shaft Generator: Reduces overall operating costs and auxiliary fuel consumption by harvesting energy directly from the main shaft rotation.
- 24/7 Hull Structural Monitoring: Digital sensors conduct continuous structural health checks to identify and predict early material fatigue or stress damage.
- Wireless Reefer Container Tracking: Automated alert mechanisms immediately flag abnormal temperature deviations in refrigerated cargo, ensuring maximum security for international cold chain shipments.
Expanding Alternative Propulsion Across Key Trade Corridors
Tao Weidong, Chief Executive Officer of OOCL, stated that the delivery of the OOCL Wisdom expands the company’s operational fleet, sets a new technical benchmark, and reinforces its commitment to green development and digital intelligence. He noted that the ongoing integration of these modern, highly efficient mega-ships will support network upgrades, enabling OOCL to establish a greener, more intelligent shipping network with broader global coverage.
Following its final sea trials, the OOCL Wisdom is scheduled for deployment along the carrier’s high-volume Far East–Northwest Europe trade lane. The introduction of the series forms part of a larger multi-billion-dollar fleet modernization program managed by OOCL’s parent company, COSCO Shipping Holdings, aimed at stabilizing supply chain resilience while complying with the world’s most stringent international maritime environmental standards.
