APM Terminals Pier 400 is taking a significant leap forward in its capabilities with the arrival of three state-of-the-art cranes designed to accommodate the largest vessels calling on the U.S. West Coast. The new cranes, delivered aboard the Zhen Hua 26 carrier following a month-long journey across the Pacific, are set to enhance operational efficiency and significantly reduce turnaround times for cargo vessels.

These “ship-to-shore” (STS) manned cranes are a considerable upgrade from the terminal’s previous models. Each crane boasts a booming reach of over 223 feet, allowing operators to efficiently access containers on the top rows without needing to switch cranes. This innovation is expected to save up to 14 hours in loading or unloading time for each vessel.

Jon Poelma, Managing Director of APM Terminals Pier 400, emphasized the economic impact of the new cranes, stating, “Every container we handle represents jobs, commerce, and growth. These cranes aren’t just machines; they are investments in the economy of Los Angeles and the broader U.S. supply chain.”

Standing at an impressive 294 feet tall, the ‘triplets’ can service vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEU) and lift up to 100 tons. Over their expected lifespan of more than 20 years, they are projected to complete around 100,000 cargo lifts annually.

With the addition of these cranes, APM Terminals Pier 400 is not only prepared for the increasing size of global shipping vessels but also optimizing its existing fleet of 19 cranes. This strategic enhancement ensures that operations can run at full capacity for larger ships while keeping smaller cranes available for other maritime activities, benefiting both shipping lines and land-based customers.

The upgrade comes at a crucial time as global trade continues to grow, and the demand for efficient port operations becomes ever more pressing.
