MSC Group has finalized a 45-year concession agreement with Nigerdock to develop a premier container terminal within Snake Island Port (SIP). This strategic move is part of a massive infrastructure and logistics investment in Nigeria totaling over USD 1 billion, signaling MSC’s long-term confidence in the nation’s role as a primary West African shipping hub.
To bring the project to fruition, MSC has signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with ITB Nigeria Ltd. and the DEME Group, ensuring world-class standards in terminal development and maritime engineering.
Engineering for Global Competitiveness
The Snake Island Container Terminal is being designed with scalability at its core, allowing it to adapt to the increasing size of global container vessels.
Technical Specifications:
- Quay Infrastructure: A 910-meter quay equipped to handle both deep-sea vessels and regional barges using a mix of Ship-to-Shore (STS) and Mobile Harbor Cranes (MHC).
- Dredging Depth: An initial depth of -16.5m Chart Datum (CD), matching the existing navigation channel, with the structural capacity to reach -18m CD in future phases.
- Yard Capacity: A 30-hectare yard featuring hybrid Rubber Tired Gantries (RTG), which balance operational efficiency with lower carbon emissions.
A Catalyst for Regional Trade
The development of Snake Island Port is expected to alleviate congestion in the Lagos pilotage district by providing a modern, high-capacity alternative to existing terminals. Diego Aponte, President of MSC Group, noted that the terminal will “open up opportunities, enhance efficiency, and elevate Snake Island Port as a major global shipping center.”
Economic Impact for Nigeria:
- Job Creation: The project is slated to generate thousands of local jobs during both the construction and operational phases.
- Increased Resilience: By expanding Nigeria’s port capacity, the terminal enhances the country’s economic resilience and ability to handle growing import/export volumes.
- Global Connectivity: The facility will serve as a critical node in MSC’s global network, facilitating smoother trade flows between Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Strategic Partnership with Nigerdock
By partnering with Nigerdock, a leading Nigerian maritime and logistics firm, MSC is leveraging local expertise and existing industrial infrastructure. This collaboration ensures that the new terminal is seamlessly integrated into the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone, providing shippers with a streamlined environment for transit, storage, and value-added services.
The project reinforces MSC’s broader strategy of investing in “nodal excellence”—strengthening every point of the supply chain from the sea to inland logistics hubs.
