Konecranes New Electric-Hybrid Crane Container Handler TOC Europe 2025

Konecranes has unveiled its new E-Hybrid Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) crane and an electric empty container handler for the global market at the TOC Europe exhibition. The company stated this is a key step toward its goal of offering fully electric variants for its entire port equipment portfolio by 2026.

The new Konecranes E-Hybrid RTG is designed to combine onboard batteries with a busbar or cable reel electricity supply, moving beyond traditional diesel-battery hybrid operation. This provides a solution for terminals that need a backup power source in case of blackouts, which can cause costly operational halts and maintenance issues.

The E-Hybrid RTG also offers significant capital expenditure savings. It requires only 60 kW of power to charge its batteries during normal operations, much less than the up to 400 kW needed for cranes powered directly by busbar or cable reel systems. Konecranes has already received an order for the new E-Hybrid RTG from a Brazilian container terminal. The technology is based on field-proven components, including the company’s battery technology used in over 200 hybrid RTGs globally.

In addition to the new crane, Konecranes is rolling out its 9-10t electric empty container handler to Europe and North America. The model has already been successfully launched in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Customers have praised the handler for its fast acceleration, quick charging, low noise, and zero tailpipe emissions.

This empty container handler is the latest addition to Konecranes’ series of fully electric lift trucks, which began with its 10-18t and 18-25t electric forklifts. Both new product introductions are part of the company’s Ecolifting initiative, which aims to increase the beneficial environmental impact of its products while helping customers reduce their carbon footprint.
