Hapag-Lloyd has officially inaugurated its new office in Kampala, marking a strategic move to enhance its operations within the East and Central African markets. This new facility positions Hapag-Lloyd to tap into Uganda’s potential as a key hub for regional trade and logistics, with excellent connectivity to five neighbouring countries.

With a population of approximately 50 million, Uganda is emerging as an attractive market on the African continent. The country’s economy is projected to grow by 5.9% in 2024, making it a favourable destination for international business. Although Uganda is landlocked and lacks direct access to the sea, it relies heavily on nearby ports, such as Mombasa in Kenya and Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania, to facilitate its trade activities. In 2023, the Port of Mombasa processed around 200,000 TEU of exports, with 22% stemming from Uganda, highlighting the nation’s significant role in regional trade dynamics.

In addition to exporting its own commodities, Uganda serves as a vital business hub for packaging and consolidating a variety of goods that transit the region. Key exports include timber and dry hides from South Sudan, cocoa, minerals, and timber from the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with coffee from Rwanda. These exports underscore Uganda’s growing influence in East African trade and its potential to streamline cross-border commerce.

“Uganda plays a vital role in the export landscape of Africa and continues to see economic growth,” said Lars Sorensen, Senior Managing Director for the Middle East region at Hapag-Lloyd. “The opening of our office in Kampala is part of our long-term strategy to establish a presence in emerging markets with high potential. With Kampala as our new hub, we can enhance our position in the African market, improve service delivery, and better cater to the needs of our customers in Uganda and its neighbouring regions.”

The newly established Hapag-Lloyd office in Kampala will be managed by Prashant Sindhwani and will initially employ a team of five. This move is expected to bolster Hapag-Lloyd’s capabilities in delivering reliable and efficient shipping solutions across the region.
