Hapag-Lloyd has finalized the expansion of its West African logistical footprint with the official opening of a new corporate office in Cotonou, Benin. Initiating full operational responsibilities on 20 May 2026, the local corporate base allows the German ocean carrier to transition from a third-party agency model to a direct commercial presence, providing structured client support and specialized container management within the region.

The expansion targets Benin’s growing import and export sectors, which are supported by continuous macroeconomic growth, regulatory trade facilitation, and deepwater transport infrastructure upgrades.

A Key Transit Hub for Landlocked Sub-Saharan Markets

The Port of Cotonou serves as an essential maritime gateway for the domestic economy of Benin and acts as a primary multi-modal transit hub for neighboring landlocked nations across the Sub-Saharan interior. By utilizing local road and rail corridors, the Cotonou facility streamlines the flow of international cargo moving to and from key landlocked regional markets, including Niger and Burkina Faso.

While Hapag-Lloyd has historically maintained operations in the country through a regional network partner, the establishment of this wholly owned office allows the line to directly manage documentation, container release protocols, and import-export invoicing.

Strategic Integration and the 2030 Corporate Framework

Jesper Kanstrup, Managing Director Sub-Region Africa at Hapag-Lloyd, stated that opening the Cotonou location represents a critical advancement for the company’s growth targets under its long-term Strategy 2030 program. He emphasized that establishing an independent, local corporate presence places the company closer to regional shippers and industrial partners, enabling faster operational response times and the development of shipping solutions tailored to the West African market.

The Cotonou office launch forms part of a broader corporate initiative by the liner to build up direct terminal and structural assets across Africa, supporting stable logistics supply chains as West African containerized trade volumes expand.
