DP World and ITOCHU Corporation, one of Japan’s largest trading companies, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on expanding logistics, supply chain infrastructure, and distribution capabilities across sub-Saharan Africa.

Strategic Collaboration Announced at TICAD9

The agreement was formalized during the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) held in Yokohama, Japan. The MoU aims to enhance connectivity and market access across the continent, specifically supporting Japanese businesses looking to establish or grow their presence in African markets.

Initial discussions between the two companies are focused on optimizing several key areas, including fleet and logistics operations, broader supply chain optimization, and the distribution of commodities and food products.

Beat Simon, Group Chief Operating Officer, Logistics at DP World, noted that the collaboration reflects a “shared vision to unlock value by combining our infrastructure and logistics expertise with ITOCHU’s commercial experience to create deeper connections between Africa and Japan.” Shinya Ishizuka, CEO of Africa Bloc for ITOCHU, expressed hope that the partnership would serve as a crucial bridge between Japanese companies and the African market.

Leveraging Extensive African Networks

The partnership combines the extensive operational footprints and expertise of both firms:

  • DP World currently operates in 48 countries across Africa, utilizing a wide network of ports, terminals, and logistics assets, including warehouses and truck fleets. The company has already invested over $3 billion in infrastructure development on the continent, with an additional $3 billion planned over the next three to five years. These investments are specifically designed to drive economic growth and boost intra-Africa trade.
  • ITOCHU Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, brings decades of commercial experience across Africa in sectors such as commodities, wholesale trade, and consumer goods. Its diverse portfolio includes textiles, machinery, energy, chemicals, foods, and general consumer goods, providing a strong foundation to support Japanese market expansion.

The MoU marks the beginning of a deeper strategic partnership, dedicated to strengthening supply chains and supporting sustainable economic growth across Africa.
