On July 2, the M.V. COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU, China’s first homegrown methanol dual-fuel containership, made its maiden call at Yangpu Port in Hainan Province. During the visit, the vessel was successfully refueled with green methanol, marking a significant step in the low-carbon transformation of China’s shipping industry.
The green methanol, supplied by SINOBUNKER, was produced entirely on Hainan Island using biogas from urban kitchen waste and animal manure. This operation verified the feasibility of an integrated Chinese domestic supply chain for green methanol, from production and storage to distribution and use.

Expanding Port Capabilities and Green Initiatives
The event coincided with the signing of a cooperation agreement between Hainan Harbor & Shipping International Port and COSCO SHIPPING (Tianjin) to establish a “Green Hub Port of Yangpu.” The bunkering operation and new agreement build on a recent expansion of the Yangpu International Container Terminal, which was completed in April. The expansion increased the terminal’s annual throughput capacity to 3.6 million TEUs and gave it the capability to accommodate vessels of up to 20,000 TEUs.
With a capacity of 16,136 TEUs, the M.V. COSCO SHIPPING YANGPU is deployed on a trans-pacific route, connecting Yangpu to major international and domestic ports. The vessel represents a triple breakthrough in Chinese shipbuilding, being the first large-scale methanol dual-fuel ship ordered by a Chinese company, delivered by a Chinese shipyard, and equipped with a domestically produced methanol engine.
