COSCO SHIPPING Development Co., Ltd. has completed a complex 4,000-kilometer overland transport mission to deliver 16 specialized steel containers to the Tibet plateau, where they will be converted into essential public and educational facilities.
The project, which marks the second consecutive year of such social support by the company, involved meticulous planning by COSCO SHIPPING Development’s Jinzhou Container Factory to navigate one of the world’s most challenging logistical routes.
Overcoming High-Altitude Logistics
The custom-built containers departed from Jinzhou on June 20, 2025, and reached their destination in Tibet’s heartland on July 9, following a nearly three-week journey. The convoy had to contend with treacherous conditions, including torrential rains, landslides, and traversing the Lhawala Pass, a high-altitude crossing situated at almost 5,000 meters above sea level.
To ensure the safety and utility of the cargo, the containers were constructed with reinforced steel and extra-thick insulation designed to withstand the region’s extreme cold and fierce winds.
Repurposed for Community Use
Upon arrival, the containers were designated for two primary purposes: enhancing local tourism infrastructure and providing improved facilities for local schools.
Cultural & Tourism Stops
Several containers will be modified into distinctive cultural and tourism stops along the national highway. Each station utilizes four 3.2-meter-wide repurposed shipping containers, featuring an ethnic aesthetic. These facilities are designed to integrate traveler amenities, tourist information, and cultural product displays. Innovative features include:
- Vertically mounted solar panels optimized for maximum efficiency.
- Expanded battery compartments to ensure a stable and reliable power supply.
- A ventilated facade with double-row louvers to manage internal climate.
Multi-functional School Halls
The remaining containers are being converted into multi-functional modular halls for local schools, designed to provide warmth and security in the snowy plateau. The solution employs an interlocking, double-layer structure to ensure stability in extreme conditions.
- Layout: The ground floor offers utility spaces (kitchen, storage, bathroom), while the second floor is dedicated to a spacious dining area that can be converted into a training or activity room.
- Climate Protection: Each module includes features such as cold-bridge prevention, a gutter system, and a sunroom to enhance insulation, drainage, and natural lighting, ensuring the halls meet national construction standards after rigorous simulation testing.
