CMA CGM EUGENIE Joins BEX2 Service to Strengthen Regional Connectivity

CMA CGM has officially held the naming ceremony for its second 15,000 TEU dual-fuel methanol containership, the CMA CGM EUGENIE. This “Kun” class vessel, built by Jiangnan Shipyard, represents a major step in the Group’s goal to operate 150 low-carbon vessels by 2029.

The ceremony took place on 17 December 2025 in Shanghai. The vessel was named under the command of Captain Svilen Santana, with Captain Bai Xiang’en—an associate professor at Shanghai Maritime University and China’s first woman to sail across the Arctic Ocean—serving as the honored Godmother. Esra Bora, General Manager of CMA CGM China, was also in attendance to celebrate the milestone.

Advancing Sustainability on the Phoenician Express

The CMA CGM EUGENIE is now deployed on the Phoenician Express (BEX2) service. This critical trade route connects manufacturing centers in Asia with key gateways in the Middle East and the Mediterranean.

Key benefits of the deployment include:

  • Low-Emission Technology: The dual-fuel engine significantly reduces sulfur oxide (SOx) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, aligning with the IMO’s 2030 targets.
  • Smart Management: Equipped with an intelligent system for real-time monitoring of fuel efficiency and onboard safety.
  • Enhanced Capacity: As a 15,000 TEU-class vessel, it provides substantial space for both dry and refrigerated cargo, supporting the increasing trade volume between the Far East and the Levant.

Strategic Hub Connectivity

The BEX2 service remains the largest regular service utilizing the Suez Canal, offering competitive transit times to Eastern Mediterranean ports.

The current BEX2 rotation features: Pusan – Shanghai – Ningbo – Shekou – Singapore – Alexandria – Beirut – Rijeka – Koper – Trieste – Mersin – Jeddah – Port Klang – Pusan

The inclusion of the EUGENIE alongside her sister ship, the CMA CGM ANTIGONE, underscores CMA CGM’s commitment to decarbonizing its primary East-West corridors. By utilizing methanol—a fuel increasingly recognized for its scalability—the Group is providing shippers with more sustainable options for their international supply chains.
