CMA CGM has introduced a new intermodal barge service connecting the Que Vo inland port in Bac Ninh Province to the international gateways of Haiphong. This strategic expansion is designed to streamline cargo flows from Northern Vietnam’s primary industrial hubs directly to the United States market, offering a more sustainable alternative to traditional road transport.

The new corridor serves key manufacturing zones in Bac Ninh, Hanoi, and Phu Tho, providing a direct link for high-volume exports such as electronics and consumer goods. By utilizing the inland waterway network, the service helps alleviate congestion on Northern Vietnam’s major highways while reducing the overall carbon footprint of the supply chain.

Seamless Integration with Transpacific Routes

The barge service is fully integrated with three of the carrier’s core maritime loops departing from Haiphong:

  • EXX (Eagle Express): A premium expedited service reaching the U.S. West Coast.
  • CBX (Chesapeake Bay Express): Connecting Northern Vietnam to the U.S. East Coast.
  • Pearl: Providing extensive coverage for transpacific trade.

This integration ensures that goods moving from inland facilities can transition smoothly to deep-sea vessels, providing shippers with enhanced visibility and more reliable transit times to major U.S. ports and Inland Points of Interest (IPI).

Operational Efficiency and Environmental Impact

Operating on a bi-weekly schedule for both imports and exports, the barge service offers a transit time of two days between Que Vo and Haiphong. This frequency supports the “just-in-time” requirements of global manufacturers operating in the region.

The shift toward water-based intermodal solutions reflects a broader industry trend toward “green logistics.” By moving containers via barge rather than truck, the service provides a cost-effective solution that significantly lowers fuel consumption and emissions per container unit. This development further strengthens Northern Vietnam’s position as a competitive and resilient manufacturing base for the global market.
