Japanese shipping line Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE) has officially commenced terminal operations at berths PC14-17 within the Kobe International Container Terminal (KICT), located on Port Island (Stage 2) at the Port of Kobe, effective September 1, 2026.
The launch follows a June 2023 agreement between “K” LINE, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), and the Kobe-Osaka International Port Corporation to consolidate and expand terminal operations at the site.
Scale of Operations and Terminal Capacity
The relocation and integration significantly scale up “K” LINE’s terminal capacity and operational flexibility in Western Japan:
- Major Handling Volume: Following the integration, KICT becomes one of Japan’s largest container facilities, handling approximately 40% of all foreign trade container volumes passing through the Port of Kobe.
- Mega-Vessel Accommodation: Enhanced deep-water berth infrastructure and expanded yard space allow the terminal to accommodate larger ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs).
- Operational Efficiency: Provides greater berth scheduling flexibility, faster vessel turnaround times, and streamlined transshipment cargo handling.
Group Integration and Sustainability Strategic Goals
Terminal management and ground operations will be executed by Nitto Total Logistics Ltd., a “K” LINE Group subsidiary.
The move aligns with “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050, supporting ongoing digital transformation (DX) initiatives, port decarbonization efforts, and long-term supply chain optimization across its global liner and logistics networks.
