CMA CGM OSMIUM World’s Largest Single-Batch Biomethanol Bunkering Shanghai Port

Container shipping carrier CMA CGM has completed the world’s largest single-batch biomethanol bunkering operation at Shanghai Port, loading 8,016 tonnes of alternative fuel onto the 13,000-TEU dual-fuel vessel CMA CGM OSMIUM.

The bunkering milestone was executed in partnership with Shanghai Electric Group Co., Ltd. and Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd. (SIPG).

Bunkering Volume and Operational Impact

The single-batch operation surpasses previous alternative-fuel bunkering records and provides full-voyage green fuel capacity:

  • Voyage Autonomy: The 8,016-tonne fuel volume provides sufficient energy to cover the vessel’s entire transoceanic voyage from Shanghai to the East Coast of South America.
  • Carbon Reduction: The use of biomethanol for the long-distance voyage is estimated to yield a net reduction in carbon emissions equivalent to 10,000 tonnes of CO₂ compared to conventional marine fuels.
  • Infrastructure Integration: Demonstrates the commercial viability of large-scale ship-to-ship biomethanol bunkering infrastructure at major container hubs.

Supply Chain and Strategic Decarbonization

The fuel supply was produced by Shanghai Electric Group’s green methanol project in Taonan, Jilin Province, linking production in Northeast China through Dalian Port to final bunkering at Shanghai.

The operation reflects CMA CGM’s broader fleet renewal and decarbonization strategy, supporting its target to achieve Net Zero Carbon by 2050 through the deployment of low-carbon dual-fuel vessels.
