Hapag-Lloyd Shore Power Port Hamburg

Hapag-Lloyd has signed an agreement with the Hamburg Port Authority to expand the use of shore power across terminals at the Port of Hamburg, supporting lower-emission vessel operations while ships are alongside.

Under the agreement, Hapag-Lloyd will utilise the port’s shore power infrastructure whenever operationally feasible and continue integrating Onshore Power Supply (OPS) into its vessel operations.

Supporting Lower-Emission Port Calls

The agreement follows the successful use of shore power by the container vessels Al Muraykh and Tihama during recent calls at the Port of Hamburg. Both vessels operate on the company’s Asia-North Europe NE2 service.

Shore power enables vessels equipped with the necessary technology to draw electricity from the local grid while berthed, allowing auxiliary engines to be switched off and helping reduce emissions during port stays.

Fleet Retrofit Programme

According to Hapag-Lloyd, all newbuild vessels are being delivered with shore power capability, while suitable ships within the existing fleet are being retrofitted to use the technology.

The company said approximately 35% of its current fleet is already equipped for shore power operations.

The initiative forms part of Hapag-Lloyd’s broader decarbonisation strategy, which includes a target of achieving net-zero fleet emissions by 2045 through a combination of new technologies, operational improvements and lower-emission energy solutions.
