Collaboration Focuses on Ammonia-Based Gas Turbine and Fuel Cell Hybrid Technology to Achieve HMM’s Net-Zero 2045 Target
HMM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with four key subsidiaries of the Hanwha Group and the Korean Register (KR) to jointly develop a next-generation, zero-carbon propulsion system for large commercial ships. This significant R&D partnership aims to accelerate maritime decarbonization and secure HMM’s position as a leader in sustainable shipping, aligning with the company’s accelerated ‘Net-Zero’ target of 2045.
The Hanwha Group subsidiaries involved in this collaboration are Hanwha Power Systems, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Aerospace, and Hanwha Systems. The partners anticipate creating a powerful synergistic model by combining HMM’s extensive operational expertise with Hanwha Group’s diverse technical capabilities and KR’s essential framework for technical verification and classification.
Focus on Innovative Hybrid Propulsion
The core focus of this project is the design of an innovative propulsion system capable of fully carbon-free operation. This will be achieved through a sophisticated hybrid system that generates thrust from an Ammonia-based Gas Turbine (GT) and electrical power from fuel cells.
The initial phase of the initiative will concentrate on developing these zero-carbon systems for application in large container vessels. Beyond the main propulsion system, the project scope also encompasses several key areas: concept design for hybrid propulsion systems combining fuel cells and battery technologies, comprehensive economic feasibility studies, and the critical design of new vessel hull forms specifically optimized for this power solution.
This initiative is a critical component of HMM’s commitment to sustainable practices. The company is already demonstrating industry leadership in the energy transition through the deployment of LNG dual-fuelled and methanol-powered containerships, responding proactively to tightening global environmental regulations and increasing customer demand for greener logistics solutions.
