Luka Koper, a prominent port and logistics company based in Slovenia, is set to enhance its operations following an order for four Konecranes electric Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes. This acquisition aims to replace older cranes within its container yard as part of an ongoing commitment to modernization. The order, placed in the third quarter of 2024, is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025.

The new electric RTGs will bolster Luka Koper’s existing fleet of 28 Konecranes RTGs, 15 of which are already fully electric and powered by cable reel systems. In addition, the company operates four Konecranes Rail-Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes. Mr. Edvin Boskin, Technical Manager of the Container Terminal, emphasized the advantages of Konecranes RTGs, stating, “They provide the high peak performance we need and are reliable and easy to maintain. Our long-term electrification strategy aligns well with Konecranes, making this order a natural continuation of our collaboration.”

The new cranes will be connected to the local grid through cable reel systems, similar to the electric RTGs already in use at the port. They will also feature auxiliary batteries and the innovative Truck Lift Prevention smart feature.

Philipp Reiter, Konecranes’ Regional Sales Manager for Port Solutions, highlighted the significance of this order: “Fully electric container handling operations are constructed step by step, and our commitment to sustainability is steadfast. Luka Koper is poised for substantial growth, and we are excited to support that journey.”

This investment in electric RTGs is part of Konecranes’ broader Ecolifting initiative, which aims to enhance its environmental impact while reducing customers’ carbon footprints. The company is committed to providing solutions that promote decarbonization, circularity, and improved safety in material handling.

With ongoing investments in technology and a strong focus on digitalization, Konecranes continues to solidify its position as a leader in the material handling industry, dedicated to fostering business growth and continuous improvement.
