Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp. has named its first two 15,500 TEU-class LNG dual-fuel container vessels, YM Willpower and YM Worthiness, marking a step forward in its fleet renewal and decarbonisation strategy.

The naming ceremonies were held on 4 February 2026 at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, with representatives from government and industry in attendance.

Advancing Low-Emission Fleet Development

The two vessels form part of Yang Ming’s new LNG dual-fuel series, designed to support its long-term target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

Each vessel has a nominal capacity of approximately 15,600 TEUs, with a length of 364.97 metres and a breadth of 51 metres. The ships are equipped with high-pressure LNG dual-fuel engines, enabling them to operate primarily on liquefied natural gas.

Compared with conventional marine fuels, LNG propulsion is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by around 20%, while exhaust gas after-treatment systems ensure compliance with IMO Tier III NOx standards.

Enhancing Operational Safety and Efficiency

The vessels are fitted with integrated navigation systems, equipment monitoring technology and satellite communication systems to support real-time data collection and improve operational safety.

Both ships have received Smart Ship notations from classification societies, reflecting their advanced digital and safety capabilities.

Deployment on Asia–Mediterranean Trade

YM Willpower entered service in early February 2026 on the MD2 route, linking key ports across Asia and the Mediterranean, including Busan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Kaohsiung, Shekou, Singapore and several European gateways.

Its sister vessel, YM Worthiness, is scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2026.

The introduction of the new vessels is expected to enhance capacity utilisation and strengthen Yang Ming’s competitiveness across major trade lanes, while supporting its transition towards more energy-efficient shipping operations.
