Wan Hai Lines held a naming ceremony for its new containership WAN HAI 711 on 30 January 2026 at the shipyard of Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding in Shanghai.
The christening ceremony was conducted by Ms. Ivy Tang, spouse of Mr. Hua Chen-Zuo, Chairman of Zhejiang Hengshuo Industrial Co., Ltd., who performed the traditional naming rituals and blessed the vessel for safe operations.
New 7,000 TEU Vessel for Mediterranean Service
WAN HAI 711 is the first of two 7,000 TEU container vessels built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for Wan Hai Lines. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in early February and will be deployed on the company’s Far East–Mediterranean Service 1.
The vessel measures 272 metres in length with a beam of 42.8 metres and a maximum draft of 15 metres. It is equipped with new engine systems and several energy-saving design features, including a bow wind deflector and a stern energy-saving device aimed at reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
Fleet Expansion Programme
Wan Hai Lines has expanded its fleet significantly in recent years. Over the past five years, the company’s fleet has grown from 92 vessels to 124, while total capacity has increased from around 290,000 TEU to approximately 600,000 TEU.
Following the delivery of WAN HAI 711, Wan Hai Lines will have a total of 35 new vessels scheduled under its ongoing fleet expansion programme. The additional capacity is expected to strengthen route coverage, improve schedule reliability and enhance service flexibility.
Community Donation in Shanghai
As part of the ceremony, Wan Hai Lines also made a donation of supplies to the Shanghai QingCongquan Training Center for Children with Autism, a local organisation supporting children with autism.
The initiative reflects the company’s broader commitment to community engagement alongside its maritime operations.
