Wallenius Wilhelmsen has officially commenced operations at the Gothenburg International Auto & RoRo Terminal (GIART), marking the start of a 12-year concession to transform Scandinavia’s largest vehicle port into a premier regional hub. This milestone transitions the terminal from a port-managed facility to one integrated into Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s expansive global logistics network.
The strategic partnership with the Port of Gothenburg is designed to enhance the Nordic region’s connectivity to major markets across Asia, North America, and Africa.
A 288,000-Square-Meter Logistics Powerhouse
The GIART facility is equipped to handle the evolving demands of the global automotive trade, particularly the surge in electric vehicle (EV) exports and imports. The terminal infrastructure includes:
- Massive Capacity: Over 288,000 square meters of dedicated terminal space.
- Berthing Excellence: Two dedicated quay positions optimized for large Ro-Ro vessels.
- Intermodal Connectivity: Direct on-dock rail links connecting the terminal to the Swedish and Norwegian hinterlands.
- Technical Services: On-site Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) facilities, allowing for vehicle processing and customization before they reach dealerships.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core
Wallenius Wilhelmsen has integrated sustainability into the terminal’s operational blueprint from day one. As the industry moves toward “Green Corridors,” the Gothenburg hub will feature:
- EV Charging Infrastructure: High-capacity charging stations to support the logistical flow of battery electric vehicles (BEVs).
- Energy-Efficient Systems: Implementation of smart lighting and low-emission terminal handling equipment.
- Digital Integration: Real-time tracking and scheduling systems to reduce dwell times and optimize berth utilization.
Long-Term Strategic Vision
The 12-year contract provides a stable platform for long-term investment. John Felitto, COO of Logistics Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, noted that the vision of a “Scandinavian hub” is now a reality, offering reliable and innovative services for all carriers.
Göran Eriksson, CEO of the Port of Gothenburg, expressed high optimism, citing Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s “strong business plan” and “customer-centric approach” as key drivers for meeting the port’s ambitious volume targets through 2038.
