The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) recently welcomed Emirates Shipping Lines (ESL) to its gateway, marking the carrier’s inaugural service into the U.S. market. The arrival of the M/V Bright on August 16 celebrated ESL’s expansion and the continuation of the successful Sun Chief Express (SCX) service.

Sun Chief Express: Fastest U.S. Transit

The SCX service, which ESL operates in partnership with UWL, is renowned as the fastest route available from Vietnam and South China to the U.S. It boasts exceptionally quick transit times of just 18 days from Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh) and 15 days from South China (Shekou). The service has proven highly reliable, earning recognition in 2024 as one of the most on-schedule and timely services in the gateway.

Till Ole Barrelet, CEO of ESL, highlighted the importance of the launch, stating, “With facilitating regional trade growth being a key driver behind our network coverage enhancements, the launch of SCX marks a significant milestone for us, and we are committed to continually strengthening our strategic position in Southeast Asia, while providing direct links to the Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, China and now, the U.S.” Founded in 2006, ESL currently manages an annual capacity of around 700,000 TEUs and calls 60 terminals weekly.

NWSA’s Strategic Role and Intermodal Reach

The SCX provides an expedited service from Ho Chi Minh and Shekou, while also offering expanded service coverage to other emerging Southeast Asian markets through efficient intermodal connections. The NWSA gateway’s robust intermodal connections extend the SCX’s reach to inland U.S. markets, linking cities from Portland to Chicago and beyond.

Hamdi Mohamed, NWSA Managing Member and Port of Seattle Commissioner, expressed pride in the gateway’s reputation, noting, “Our strong connectivity across the nation, combined with our commitment to innovation and best-in-class service, makes the Northwest Seaport Alliance both a welcoming entry point to the U.S. economy and a trusted partner for global shipping lines.”

Co-Chair and Port of Tacoma Commission President John McCarthy added that welcoming new partners while maintaining key services illustrates the NWSA’s commitment to thoughtful balance and growth. The SCX service also supports U.S. exports back to Vietnam, China, and Southeast Asia, offering premium refrigerated services for high-demand agricultural commodities, such as cherries, potatoes, and protein, sourced from U.S. farms.
